Desertification & land degradation

Story hook
In September 2019, on the outskirts of Delhi, environment ministers from nearly 200 countries gathered for a summit about a slow-motion disaster that rarely makes the front page: the death of fertile land. India was hosting COP14 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) — and the statistics on display were sobering. Nearly a third of India's land is already degraded, its productivity bleeding away through erosion, salt, overgrazing and deforestation. From that summit came the "Delhi Declaration," and a striking Indian pledge: to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land — an area larger than the United Kingdom — by 2030.
The word "desertification" is misleading. It does not mean existing deserts like the Thar marching outward. It means the degradation of land in dry regions — drylands losing their fertility until they can no longer support crops, livestock or people. It is one of the three great planetary environmental crises, alongside climate change and biodiversity loss — and the three are bound together by the three Rio Conventions of 1992-94.
Today the fight has a clear goal — Land Degradation Neutrality, the idea that any land we degrade must be matched by land we restore — and bold projects like restoring the Aravalli range as a green wall against the advancing desert. Desertification is the quiet emergency beneath India's food and water security.
Why this matters for UPSC
A steadily-tested GS-III topic (land degradation, conservation) with an important India-hosted-COP14 hook. Prelims tests the UNCCD (one of the three Rio Conventions), COP14 (Delhi, 2019), Land Degradation Neutrality, the Bonn Challenge, and the meaning of desertification. Mains and interviews link it to food/water security, climate change, and SDG 15 (Life on Land). It rounds out the trio of Rio Conventions alongside the UNFCCC and CBD.
