Geographic in news

Geographic in news — places, channels, straits, conflicts

Story hook

14 November 2023, 4:00 AM IST, Bab-el-Mandeb Strait between Yemen and Djibouti — the choke-point through which 12% of global trade flows. Houthi rebels from Yemen, in solidarity with Palestine after Israel's Gaza offensive, fire ballistic missiles at the Galaxy Leader — a Bahamas-flagged car carrier with links to an Israeli businessman. The vessel is hijacked, diverted to Hodeidah port. Within weeks, Red Sea shipping volumes collapse by 70%; Maersk + Hapag-Lloyd divert to the Cape of Good Hope, adding 10-14 days and 30% fuel cost per voyage. The Suez Canal revenue craters; Egypt loses a third of its foreign exchange in three months.

The Bab-el-Mandeb crisis is a textbook geographic current-affairs moment: a strait, a choke-point, a flashpoint — all interacting. UPSC tracks these.

Three months later, Iran's helicopter crash in mountainous East Azerbaijan province (19 May 2024) kills President Ebrahim Raisi, putting Tabriz on every front page. Two months after that, in Wayanad district of Kerala (30 July 2024), monsoon-triggered landslides bury Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala villages — 400+ deaths, India's worst landslide in decades. Geography in news = the where of unfolding events.

Why this matters for UPSC

Places-in-news fetches 2-3 Prelims questions every cycle (strait identification, recent disaster locations, recent conflict zones, country-capital pairs for less-familiar countries). Mains uses geographies as examples in International Relations + Disaster Management answers. Interview boards probe flashpoints ("Tell me about the Red Sea crisis"). High-yield: straits, channels, recent disaster zones, conflict zones, border / territorial disputes.
