It is 3 July 2024. The Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi releases the Fourth Advance Estimate for 2023-24. The number is a record: 332.3 million tonnes of foodgrains — rice 137.8 mt, wheat 113.3 mt, coarse cereals 57.3 mt, pulses 24.5 mt. Sugarcane 453 mt. Cotton 32.5 million bales of 170 kg. Horticulture 352 mt. On the same desk sits a parallel briefing: Punjab's groundwater depletion has accelerated to 51 cm per year in the central districts; the kharif paddy area in 2024 is 31.9 lakh hectares, almost unchanged from 2010.

The paradox: India produces more food than ever, yet the cropping pattern remains stubbornly skewed. Rice + wheat occupy ~75% of irrigated foodgrain area. Pulses + oilseeds stay at 16-18% of gross cropped area despite import bills of ~Rs.1.5 lakh crore on edible oils alone. Meanwhile, India achieved its first International Year of Millets (2023, UN), and the Sri Anna brand was unveiled — but millet area has barely moved at **12 mha**.

GS-III routinely asks about cropping pattern diversification, sustainability of rice-wheat monoculture, and the production trajectory of specific crops. Prelims questions in 2022, 2020, 2018, 2016, 2013, 2010 have tested kharif/rabi crop identification, top-producer states, and crop-water requirements — at least one MCQ per cycle.
