Important straits, canals, channels, gulfs
Story hook
19 November 2023. A Houthi rebel speedboat boards the Galaxy Leader, a car-carrier ship registered in the Bahamas. The seizure happens at the southern mouth of the Red Sea — the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, 35 km wide at its narrowest. Within months, the Houthi attacks force the world's two largest shipping companies — Maersk + MSC — to abandon the Suez Canal route and reroute around the Cape of Good Hope. Shipping costs to Europe triple. The Red Sea crisis becomes the most disruptive maritime event since the 1956 Suez Crisis.
One narrow strait — controlled briefly by a few hundred rebels — re-routed 15% of global trade and 30% of container traffic. The world economy depends on a handful of choke points like this. Hormuz (20% of world oil + LNG passes through), Malacca (China's lifeline — 80% of its energy imports), Bosporus + Dardanelles (Russian grain to global markets), Panama (5% of world trade, hit by drought in 2023-24), Suez (12% of world trade, blocked by Ever Given in March 2021 for 6 days, costing $10 billion).
Maritime geography is global plumbing. Whoever controls the choke point sets the chokehold. Whoever forgets the map ends up paying the bill — in oil prices, in shipping rates, in war.
