Story hook
A boy stands at a wedding banquet and points to a portrait on the wall. "Brothers and sisters I have none," he murmurs, "but that man's father is my father's son." The aunt beside him squints. Two pavilions over, a candidate in a 2018 CSAT hall faces the very same line, fifteen options of "Who is the man in the portrait?", and a ticking clock. She has ninety seconds. She closes her eyes, walks the relation back one link at a time, and finishes with thirty seconds to spare.
That is what this unit really tests — not English fluency, not algebra, but the patience to walk a single chain link by link without losing your place. Add a north arrow or a queue of children sorted by height, and the trick is the same: build a tiny picture, refuse to skip a step.
CSAT examiners love these because they are language-agnostic, can be solved in under two minutes by the prepared, and quietly drown the unprepared who reach for algebra they do not need.
Why this matters for UPSC
Roughly five to seven of the eighty CSAT questions every year come from blood relations, directions, or ranking — call it 10% of the paper, the most reliable bucket of "if you practise, you score" marks. The exam is qualifying (33%, or 66/200) but a single weak day in the GS Paper-I makes that 33% threshold the day's true cut-off, so every guaranteed mark matters. UPSC has not asked a Mains question on these topics in living memory.
