Fractions made simple
Fractions made simple · understanding parts of a whole
Story hook
It is your little cousin's birthday. There is one big chocolate bar on the table and four hungry children standing around it. Everyone wants a fair share — nobody should get more, nobody should get less.
So you snap the chocolate into 4 equal pieces and hand one piece to each child. Each child now holds one piece out of four.
That little phrase — one piece out of four — is a fraction. You just used a fraction without anyone teaching you. We write it as 1/4 (say it "one-fourth" or "one quarter").
By the end of this lesson, snapping that chocolate into pieces will feel as easy as breathing — and you will be able to add, compare and share fractions like a pro.
Why this matters for UPSC
CSAT (UPSC Prelims Paper II) is a qualifying paper — you only need 33% to pass, not a top score. Fractions are one of the friendliest ways to earn those easy marks. They appear directly in arithmetic sums, and they hide inside percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, and data interpretation — almost every other CSAT topic stands on top of fractions.
In real life you use fractions every single day — half a glass of water, quarter kilo of sugar, three-fourths of your phone battery, two overs left out of twenty in a cricket match. Get comfortable here and the rest of the maths paper gets much, much easier. Take a breath — this is genuinely one of the simplest topics you will ever learn.
