World agriculture
World agriculture — staple zones · wheat belt · corn belt · cotton belt · rice belt · plantation belts
Story hook
Spring 2022, Russia invades Ukraine. Within weeks, wheat futures spike to USD 12.94/bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade — the highest since 2008. Why does a tank rolling into Mariupol shake the chapati price in a Patna kitchen? Because Ukraine + Russia together supply ~28% of global wheat exports, 18% of corn, and 52% of sunflower oil, and almost all of it ships out of five Black Sea ports. When the ports close, the Egyptian baker, Yemeni school canteen, Nigerian noodle factory all run dry within a quarter.
The story isn't really about politics — it is about a belt of soil. The Ukrainian Steppe, a 200-km-wide arc from Odesa to Kharkiv, sits on chernozem — the world's deepest, most fertile black-earth soil, formed under 8,000 years of natural grassland. The Russian invasion struck precisely the part of Eurasia that nature, glaciation, climate and millennia of grasses had pre- selected as one of Earth's six great wheat belts — alongside the North American Prairies, the Argentinian Pampas, the Australian Wheat Belt, the North China Plain and the Indo-Gangetic Plain.
A UPSC candidate who can name those six belts, know which crops grow where and why, and tie geography to global news, is doing real geography — not memorising flashcards.
Why this matters for UPSC
Syllabus location: GS-I — World Physical Geography (agricultural geography) + GS-III intersection (food security, global trade). Asked in Prelims almost every year as matching pairs (crop ↔ country, soil ↔ region). Mains 2018 ("factors responsible for the location of the major industries…"), 2020 (food security trends), 2023 (wheat-belt geography in the Russia-Ukraine context). High yield because numerical facts (top producers, area shares) are testable.
