DRDO laboratories

DRDO laboratories — DRDL, ARDE, HEMRL, RCI, ADE, ADRDE, DEAL, DLRL, SSPL, INMAS · 50+ labs across domains

Story hook

It is the morning of 27 March 2019. Outside a non-descript building in Hyderabad's Kanchanbagh area, an engineer at the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) is staring at a telemetry monitor. Three hundred kilometres above the Bay of Bengal, a Microsat-R satellite — launched two months earlier — is about to cross overhead. At 11:09 IST, a three-stage interceptor from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island) off the Odisha coast leaves its launcher. Three minutes later, the satellite is no more. Mission Shakti has just made India the fourth nation in history with proven anti-satellite (ASAT) capability, after the US, Russia and China.

The interceptor was designed by RCI. Its propulsion came from the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in the same Hyderabad campus. Its solid propellant came from the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) at Pune. Its on-board electronics came from the Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL) at Dehradun. Its real-time tracking software came from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), next door to RCI.

Five laboratories. One mission. Forty-five other DRDO labs were not involved that day. This is the architecture of India's defence R&D establishment — 52 laboratories spread across 22 cities, each a specialist in one narrow slice of the kill-chain, knitted together by a single corporate body called the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Why this matters for UPSC

DRDO has appeared in almost every Prelims since 2015 — usually as "which lab developed which system" or "headquarters of X DRDO laboratory" questions. Mains GS-III tests indigenisation strategy, cost overruns, and the Atmanirbhar Bharat angle. Interview boards probe the DRDO-private sector handover and the recent Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020.
