Sangam Age

Sangam Age · Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas

Story hook

It is the 1st century CE. In Muziris (modern Pattanam, Kerala), Tamil merchants are loading black pepper, cardamom, ivory, and pearls onto Roman vessels. In exchange, Roman aurei (gold coins) and amphorae of wine pour in. Pliny the Elder, half a world away in Rome, complains that India is draining the Roman treasury of 50 million sesterces a year.

In nearby Madurai, Pandyan court poets are composing verses that will, two thousand years later, be classified as Sangam literature — over 2,381 poems by 473 poets in Tamil, the only Indian classical language with an unbroken literary tradition. Sangam's three crowns — Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas — fight, marry, and trade their way into foundational South Indian memory.

For UPSC, the Sangam Age is the flagship Tamil-history chapter, asked across Prelims + Mains GS-I + Tamil-specific optionals.

Why this matters for UPSC

For UPSC:

  • Prelims: Three Tamil kingdoms (Cheras + Cholas + Pandyas); Sangam literature (Tolkappiyam + Ettutogai + Pattupattu + Pathinenkilkanakku); 3 Sangams (Madurai); Tamil Brahmi inscriptions; Karikala (Chola) + Senguttuvan (Chera) + Nedunjeliyan (Pandya); Indo-Roman trade ports — Muziris, Arikamedu, Korkai.
  • Mains GS-I: South Indian social structure; agrarian economy; Tamil poetics (Akam + Puram themes).
  • Mains GS-II: Tamil cultural diplomacy; classical language status.
