Early Medieval
Early Medieval — Tripartite Struggle · Cholas under Rajaraja & Rajendra
Story hook
It is 1010 CE in Thanjavur (Tanjore), capital of the Imperial Cholas. Atop a 60-metre vimana — the tallest in the world for the next 1,000 years — sits an 80-tonne monolithic granite kalasha, hauled up an earthen ramp said to have stretched 6 km to the village of Sarapallam. The temple, Rajarajeshvara (Brihadeshwara), is the crowning achievement of Rajaraja I (985-1014 CE), who united the Tamil south and now claims the title Chakravartin.
His son Rajendra I (1014-1044 CE) will go further — marching to the Ganga (earning the title Gangaikonda Chola), invading Srivijaya (Indonesia) with a maritime fleet, building a new capital Gangaikondacholapuram, and sending embassies to Song China.
For 230 years (~850-1279 CE), the Imperial Cholas would run the most sophisticated administration South Asia would see until the Mughals, with local self-government, sea power, brass+bronze + temple culture that still defines Tamil Nadu.
