13 March 2024, 1:00 PM UTC, UNDP New York. The Human Development Report 2023-24, titled "Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarized world", is published. India's Human Development Index ticks up to 0.644 — rank 134 out of 193 countries — a one-rank improvement over 2022. Bangladesh is 129, ahead of India. Sri Lanka is 78. India's own headline: highest annual improvement in HDI since 2014.

Six months later, the Global Hunger Index 2024 ranks India 105 of 127 with score 27.3 — categorising India's hunger as "serious". The Government of India formally rejects the methodology, citing the "biased Proportion of Undernourished Population" estimate that uses an FAO formula. The annual back-and-forth between government and ranking body has become a ritual.

Indices are how the world measures India and how India measures itself. UPSC tests them not for the rank alone but for methodology, host organisation, recent trend, and the policy critique. Reports + indices contribute 1-2 Prelims questions every cycle (rank-matching, host-org matching, methodology), and are must-cite material in every Mains GS-II/GS-III answer (governance, education, health, environment, economic policy). Interview boards probe specific rankings and India's stance on methodology. A well-curated cheat-sheet is high-yield.
