Story hook

It is 17 January 1941, the dead of night at 38/2 Elgin Road, Calcutta. Subhas Chandra Bose — under British surveillance since his resignation from Congress presidency in 1939 — slips out of his home in disguise as a Pathan named "Mohammad Ziauddin". After an 88-day journey through Peshawar → Kabul → Moscow → Berlin, he reaches the German capital on 27 March 1941. Hitler's Foreign Ministry receives him with surprise. Bose's plan: organise Indian POWs in Germany + Italy into an Indian Legion to liberate India alongside German forces.

After 17 months in Berlin, Bose realises Germany cannot reach India. He requests transfer to East Asia. In February 1943, a German U-boat (U-180) sails him from Kiel; near Madagascar, he transfers to a Japanese submarine (I-29). By July 1943 he is in Tokyo. He takes over the Indian National Army (INA) from Captain Mohan Singh's earlier efforts.

On 21 October 1943, in Singapore, Bose proclaims the Provisional Government of Free India (Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind). Slogan: "Tum Mujhe Khoon Do, Main Tumhe Azadi Doonga" (Give me blood, I shall give you freedom). The INA, ~50,000+ strong with Indian POWs + Indian diaspora in SE Asia, marches into Imphal + Kohima in 1944. Bose's currency, postage stamps, women's regiment (Rani of Jhansi Regiment under Lakshmi Sahgal), and political diplomacy create the first Indian-led wartime government.

But by mid-1945, Japan is collapsing. On 18 August 1945, Bose dies in a plane crash at Taihoku (Taipei), Taiwan — according to multiple official investigations, though theories about his survival persist.

For UPSC, Subhas Chandra Bose + INA + revolutionary nationalism is a heavily-tested Mains GS-I topic on the freedom struggle.

Why this matters for UPSC

The revolutionary stream of Indian freedom struggle:

  • Complemented Gandhian non-violence with armed resistance.
  • Bose's INA + Royal Indian Navy Mutiny 1946 were direct triggers for British withdrawal decision.
  • Inspired generations of post-independence political leaders.
  • Contemporary cultural icon — Netaji is symbol of patriotic sacrifice + military leadership.

For UPSC:

  • Prelims: Bose's biographical timeline, INA structure + key battles, Royal Indian Navy Mutiny 1946, HSRA + revolutionary groups.
  • Mains GS-I: Bose's ideology + comparison with Gandhi, revolutionary stream's contribution, post-Gandhi nationalist thought.

This file covers Subhas Chandra Bose's career, INA mechanics, revolutionary nationalism predecessors (Bhagat Singh, HSRA), post-1945 trials, and legacy.
