Percentages from scratch

Percentages from scratch · what percent really means

Story hook

Imagine it is your birthday. Your mother buys a box with 100 small chocolates in it. That is a nice round number — exactly one hundred.

You decide to share. You give 40 chocolates to your best friend, you keep 35 for yourself, and you save the last 25 for your little cousin who is coming tomorrow.

Now your friend asks, "How much of the box did I get?" You could say "40 chocolates." But here is a smarter way to say it: "You got 40 out of 100 — that is 40 percent of the box."

That little word — percent — is just a friendly way of saying "out of 100." And because the box had exactly 100 chocolates, the maths was easy: 40 chocolates is 40 percent.

In this lesson we will learn what percent really means, and how to use it even when the box does not have a tidy 100 chocolates in it. By the end you will be able to read your exam marks, your mobile battery, and a shop's discount sign — and instantly understand them. Let's begin from zero.

Why this matters for UPSC

For your CSAT exam (UPSC Prelims Paper II):

  • CSAT is a qualifying paper. You do not need a top score — you just need 33% (that is 66 marks out of 200) to pass. Percentages are one of the easiest and most common topics, so getting good at them is a quick, safe way to bag those qualifying marks.
  • Many other CSAT topics — discount, profit, interest, data charts — are really just percentages wearing different clothes. Master percent once, and several chapters suddenly feel easy.

For real life (this is the fun part):

  • Your exam report card shows "78%". Now you will know exactly what that means.
  • Your phone says "battery 60%". You will know how much is left.
  • A shop says "20% off". You will know how much money you save.
  • A bank says "interest 7% per year". You will know what it pays.

So this is not just an exam topic. It is a life skill you will use every single day. And the good news — it starts as simply as sharing chocolates. Stay relaxed and follow along.
